BIOS has extensive and modern equipment for the performance of test stand and field measurements at combustion, gasification and pyrolysis plants. This equipment includes conventional gas analysis and particle measurement technologies as well as innovative, partly self-developed devices and methods, which are especially used for fly ash, aerosol and deposit sampling, for hot gas measurements (measurements and sampling in reactors at up to 1,200 ° C) and for low temperature corrosion measurements. For measurement data evaluation, special in-house developed software is available.

At BIOS, several test stands for prototypes are available as well as special laboratory reactors for the investigation of the thermal decomposition behaviour of biomass fuels.

Furthermore, BIOS offers chemical and electron microscopy analyses of fuels, ashes, fine particulate matter (aerosols), tars, ash deposits and slags, condensates as well as boiler water, combined with an evaluation of the results.

Fields of activity

The work of BIOS in the R&D sector mainly focuses on the following areas::

  • Test runs in the course of product development with accompanying measurements, sampling and analyses at the test stands at BIOS as well as on request at test stands at plant manufacturers
  • Test runs in the course of product development with accompanying measurements, sampling and analyses on lab-scale and pilot plants
  • Test runs in the course of plant monitoring and plant optimization with accompanying measurements, sampling and analyses at real-scale plants (field measuring campaigns)
  • Test runs with specially designed laboratory reactors
  • Development of laboratory reactors for specific test requirements (for example laboratory reactors for the investigation of the thermal decomposition behavior of biomass fuels)
  • Development of measurement set-up and measurement methods for special, non-standard investigations in laboratory, pilot and large-scale plants
  • Test run planning and test run evaluation
  • Chemical analyses of biomass fuels, substrates, ashes and fine particulate matter (aerosols), tars, deposits, condensates and boiler water
  • Electron microscopic analyses of ash, fly ash, aerosols, deposits and material samples

Sectors

  • Manufacturers of small-scale biomass boilers and stoves
  • Manufacturers of industrial biomass combustion plants
  • Manufacturers of biomass CHP technologies
  • Manufacturers of biomass gasification and pyrolysis plants
  • Manufacturer of flue gas cleaning systems
  • Plant operators and utilities

Scope of work

Usually, the scope of the work of BIOS in the course of test runs, measurements and analyses includes the following points:

Test runs at the testing facilities at BIOS

  • Test run planning and creation of the test run program
  • Plant installation and commissioning (with the support of the plant manufacturer)
  • Measuring site preparation
  • Plant operation and performance of measurements and sampling with subsequent analyses
  • Data evaluation, evaluation of results and reporting

Test runs at test stands of plant manufacturers and field measurements

  • Test run planning and creation of the test run program
  • Measuring point preparation (usually carried out by the customer or operator of the system under the guidance of BIOS)
  • Optional support during plant operation
  • Performance of measurements and sampling with subsequent analyses
  • Data evaluation, evaluation of results and reporting

Chemical analyses

  • Optional: support during sampling (if this is not done by the customer / plant operator)
  • Sample preparation for analyses
  • Performance of analysis
  • Reporting including a description of the methods applied
  • Optional: problem-specific evaluation of the analysis results
